Fawns, what a cute sight to see.
It is the time of year when female deer start having their fawns or baby deer.
Now most people see baby deer in their yard and wonder, where is Mom?
Well don't worry, she is nearby. It is a natural process where mom will only feed the
fawn or fawns a few times a day or only at night.
Why you ask?
Well it is a protective measure to protect the baby fawn from predators.
A baby deer throws off little scent in its first few weeks of life. It will lie very still or not
move at all to protect itself from humans or other predators like coyotes.
Because of this technique, predators walk by and never detect the little ones.
If you happen to see a baby deer, please do not handle it, again two things are happening.
One is, mom is around, and she will take care of it, and two, any human odor or
intervention will only put the young fawns' life in trouble.
If you see the fawn in the same position for more than 24 hours, please call your division
of wildlife for instructions. They can further assist you in the next step and ease your
concerns.
